Título: How tourists decide which heritage site to visit
Fuente: Tourism Review. v.59, n.2. International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism, AIEST
Páginas: pp. 12-16
Año: 2004
Resumen: The relationship between the tourists and the heritage presented has already been identified as important for the understanding of tourist behaviour at the level of a specific heritage site. This study seeks to clarify whether tourists’ perception of various spaces in relation to their own heritage could give an insight into tourists’ decision which heritage site to visit. The findings of the study are based on a survey that examined tourists’ visitation patterns to different heritage sites in Israel located within a relatively short distance of each other. The findings support the idea that the perception of the site in relation to the tourists’ own heritage lies at the heart of an understanding of tourists’ visitation patterns. The contribution to the management and theoretical understanding of heritage tourism is discussed.

Título: Challenging the present approach to heritage tourism: Is tourism to heritage places heritage tourism?
Fuente: Tourism Review. v.56, n.1/2. International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism, AIEST
Páginas: pp. 51-53
Año: 2001
Resumen: Observing visitors’ behaviour in places presenting heritage and reviewing the tourism literature dealing with ’heritage’ tourism led to this research that is aimed at clarifying the core of heritage tourism. The common approach that heritage tourism consists of tourists in heritage places, is challenged. The relationship between four groups of variables (the tourists’ personal characteristics, the tourists’ awareness of the history of the site, the tourists’ perception of a site in relation to their own heritage and, the site attributes) and the tourists’ visitation patterns (before a visit, during a visit, and after a visit) as the outcome variables was investigated. The actual study was conducted in Israel because of its attributes as a space containing a variety of heritage sites in a relatively small area, which relate to different tourists on different grounds. The research looked in detail at two sites: the Wailing Wall and Massada. The results (specifically the tourists’ perception of the sites) indicate that the relationship between the tourists and the heritage site attributes is at the core of the phenomenon of heritage tourism. The understanding of this relationship has value for the study of heritage-related behaviour including heritage tourism. The study suggests a new approach to understanding heritage tourism which could be applicable for other subgroups of tourism, and could have implications for the management of heritage and historic sites.

Título: Mapping tourist pressure: Discussion, development and examples
Fuente: Tourism Review. v.55, n.3. International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism, AIEST
Páginas: pp. 2-7
Año: 2000
Resumen: This paper discusses research which has been conducted irregularly over a period of some thirty years on the topic of tourist pressure and how this phenomenon can be portrayed. This is a relatively undeveloped topic which has not received much attention in the tourist literature, and yet it is felt that the concept mad its application hold considerable potential benefit for tourism planning and management. The key issue is to develop a methodology which allows the phenomenon to be adequately described and portrayed in such a manner that the resulting information can be integrated into the appropriate management of tourist numbers.

Título: Seasonality in tourism: Issues and implications
Fuente: Tourism Review. v.53, n.3. International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism, AIEST
Páginas: pp. 18-24
Año: 1998
Resumen: Seasonality in tourism has traditionally been regarded as a major problem which needs to be overcome, but relatively little research has been conducted on the patterns or causes of this phenomenon. The paper begins with a discussion of the characteristics of seasonality and develops a methodology to study the phenomenon in more detail. Seasonality in parts of Scotland are analysed in order to test the approach suggested and to determine if the measures proposed are practical. Two basic questions are examined, whether seasonality in tourism in the study area has changed significantly over a thirty year period, and whether there are spatial dimensions to seasonality that can be detected in the study area. The paper concludes that the variation in seasonality over the time period studied is more complex than anticipated and results are not consistent throughout the area and the measures used. Evidence of spatial variation in seasonality was confirmed. The study concludes that while the measures and approach used would appear to have merit and applicability, further research is needed to produce definitive answers and to fully understand the process of seasonality in tourism.

Título: Managing ecotourism: an opportunity spectrum approach
Fuente: Tourism Management. v.17, n.8
Páginas: pp. 557-566
Año: Dec. 1996
Resumen: Over the past decade and a half, visitor management frameworks and procedures have been developed to address issues resulting from tourism and recreation use of areas. These have included the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS), the Tourism Opportunity Spectrum (TOS), Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC), Visitor Activities Management Planning (VAMP), and the Visitor Impact Monitoring Process (VIMP). This paper outlines a new framework, based on existing approaches, within which opportunity for ecotourism may be set. It incorporates and modifies ideas from the ROS and TOS to address ecotourism specifically, is termed the Ecotourism Opportunity Spectrum (ECOS) and contains eight components. The paper concludes with a discussion of the difficulties of assigning relative priorities to ecotourism activities in a region, and assessing the significance of the resulting environmental impacts.
