Título: Beyond the nation-state narrative: an empirical inquiry into the cross-country and cross-income-group carbon consumption patterns
Fuente: Environment and Development Economics. v.27, n.1. Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics; Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Páginas: pp. 67-85
Año: feb. 2022
Resumen: The concern for inequality, growth and development is undoubtedly crucial in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation. However, most studies either rely on the nation-state estimates of carbon emissions to propose a uniform nation-wide growth (or degrowth) strategy, or they tailor the method to assess the inequality of one country at a time, making a cross-country cross-income comparison difficult. To fill this analytical gap, we synthesize the existing methods of emission calculations and calculate the level of carbon emissions associated with given income deciles of household consumption in five countries, namely China, Germany, India, the UK and USA. We find that the within-country inequality varies among countries, with the ratio between the top and bottom income deciles ranging from three to nine at the household level. We also find that the carbon emissions of the top income group in urban China is almost comparable to that of their peer group in the US, UK and Germany. Based on these results, we discuss the use of the remaining global carbon budget in the context of development and inequality.

Título: Semiparametric estimation of proportional mean residual life model in presence of censoring
Fuente: Biometrics. v.61, n.1. International Biometric Society
Páginas: pp. 170-178
Año: mar. 2005
Resumen: A mean residual life function is the average remaining life of a surviving subject, as it varies with time. The proportional mean residual life model was proposed by Oakes and Dasu (1990, Biometrika 77, 409-410) in regression analysis to study its association with related covariates in absence of censoring. In this article, we develop some semiparametric estimation procedures to take censoring into account. The proposed methodology is evaluated via simulation studies, and further applied to a clinical trial of chemotherapy in postoperative radiotherapy of lung cancer patients.

Título: Learning and Incentive-Compatible Mechanisms for Public Goods Provision: An Experimental Study
Fuente: Journal of Political Economy. v.106, n.3. The University of Chicago Press
Páginas: pp. 633-662
Año: 1998
Resumen: This is the first systematic experimental study of the comparative performance of two incentive-compatible mechanisms for public goods provision: the basic quadratic mechanism by Groves and Ledyard and the paired-difference mechanism by Walker. Our experiments demonstrate that the performance of the basic quadratic mechanism under a high punishment parameter is far better than that of the same mechanism under a low punishment parameter, which, in turn, is better than that of the paired-difference mechanism. We estimate three individual behavioral models: an exponentialized relative payoff sum model outperforms the generalized fictitious play model. We also provide a sufficient condition for convergence under the basic quadratic mechanism.
