Título: Cross-cultural differences in the practices of hotel managers: a study of Dutch and Belgian hotel managers
Fuente: Tourism Management. v.17, n.7
Páginas: pp. 544-548
Año: Nov. 1996
Resumen: In the service sector there has been debate and research on whether it is the culture of the organization or that of the location that shapes hotel management practice -- particularly given the internationalization of certain, mostly US-style practices. Here Myriam Jansen-Verbeke and Liesbet Steel of Rotterdam’s Erasmus University report on a survey of hotel managers in Belgium and The Netherlands. Differences are slight, but whether this is because of a shared cultural background or a homogenizing organizational culture is not clear. Comparisons with a larger study of managers in 13 countries worldwide are made.

Título: Scanning museum visitors : Urban tourism marketing
Fuente: Annals of Tourism Research. v.23, n.2. Pergamon
Páginas: pp. 364-375
Año: 1996
Resumen: The role of museums in developing urban tourism is researched with special attention to the motivation constructs of visitors and the possible added value of a "museumpark". Interviews with visitors were held in order to identify their motivation. The laddering technique was used to analyze the data. Both the interviews and the survey results can be used for the purpose of strategic positioning of the museum and cultural urban tourism. Marketing implications can be deduced from core motives. In addition, for urban authorities and tourism marketers, the motivation and behavior patterns of museum visitors offer interesting clues when developing an attractive urban tourism product.

Título: Tourism development in Vietnam
Fuente: Tourism Management. v.16, n.4
Páginas: pp. 315-321
Año: June 1995
Resumen: The recent decision by the United States to lift the 20-year-old trade embargo is a great boost to Vietnam’s economic development in general and to its tourism in particular. The emergence of mass tourism in the 1960s bypassed Vietnam, and its neighbors Laos and Cambodia, because of war and political and economic constraints. Vietnam is therefore not ready for a large influx of tourists. Specifically, it lacks a suitable infrastructure, accommodation facilities, an appropriate tourism organization and skilled staff. Vietnam’s new economic policy of ’openness’ (doi moi) will facilitate tourism development. This report examines Vietnam’s tourism resources, market potential, and the need for government to assume the broad responsibility and policies that should optimize economic benefits whilst preserving the country’s social, cultural and ecological features.

Título: A regional analysis of tourist flows within Europe
Fuente: Tourism Management. v.16, n.1
Páginas: pp. 73-80
Año: Feb. 1995
Resumen: The process of regionalization in Europe has attracted little attention in tourist studies, which tend to focus on the comparison between national statistics. By analysing the inter-regional and intra-regional tourist flows within Europe, the geographical pattern of tourist-destination and touristgenerating areas becomes clear and this allows for a realistic assessment of the position and potentials of particular destination areas within the European tourism market, where competition is no longer between countries but between regions. Despite the lack of consensus on the definition of a ’region’ and the statistical problems of studying tourist flows on a regional level, the results of this analysis indicate some relevant characteristics of the European tourism market and open interesting perspectives for future research on regional tourism development.
