| Resumen: | There is ample evidence that canal systems often fail to reach their design capacity. This study argues that inefficient allocation of water within canals is one cause. This study collects precise measures of farm-level water withdrawals using flow meters in a canal in Pakistan. These data reveal that farmers near the head of the canal get more canal water than farmers near the tail, even accounting for conveyance efficiency. The results suggest that improvements in canal water management would yield efficiency gains for the canal. |

| Resumen: | In order to explore the conditions for successful communal irrigation management, this study investigates the determinants of household contributions to the cleaning of irrigation channels and the availability of water. By using household-level data collected in a large-scale gravity irrigation scheme in Uganda, whose management was transferred from the government to the community, we find that household contributions to the cleaning of irrigation channels are determined by the scarcity of irrigation water, the opportunity cost of labor and the private benefit associated with plot size. We also find that the availability of irrigation water increases in the tertiary irrigation canal where the coefficient of variation of plot size is large, which may indicate that farmers of larger plots are particularly active in water management. These findings suggest that farmers are responsive to private benefits and, hence, the support of the government for communities to implement punishment may be effective for successful irrigation management. |

| Resumen: | Tecnologías. La irrigación experimentó una transformación en gran parte de las áreas agrícolas del mundo. Esto fue posible a partir de la instrumentación de innovaciones institucionales y tecnológicas que cambiaron la organización de la distribución del agua y su eficiencia de uso. Las formas clásicas de gestión y aplicación del recurso hídrico fueron reemplazadas por una combinación de nuevas normas de derechos sobre el agua y de técnicas para su presurización para riego. De esta manera, se facilitó la sustitución de los esquemas tradicionales de riego por otros más eficientes en el uso de los recursos hídricos. Éstos posibilitaron el cultivo de especies de mayor valor económico y la colonización de nuevas áreas agrícolas. En este contexto de transformación, el riego por goteo tuvo un rol fundamental para instrumentar estrategias que mejoran la productividad del agua en la agricultura. |
