Título: Rural household participation in markets for non-timber forest products in Zambia
Fuente: Environment and Development Economics. v.19, n.4. Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics; Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Páginas: pp. 487-504
Año: Aug. 2014
Resumen: Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) support livelihoods in rural communities through provision of food, fuel, materials, medicines and income from sales. We estimated the contribution of NTFPs to rural household income in Zambia, and used a two-stage tobit alternative model to identify the factors associated with participation in NTFP markets. NTFPs accounted for 35 per cent of household income for participating households, second only to trading. Human capital variables and the value of assets were found to be significant determinants of both participation in business activities related to NTFPs and the associated household income, and the poor were more dependent on NTFPs than wealthier households. The effect of average rainfall underscores the role that NTFPs play in providing a safety net during periods of low crop yields. Rural development policies should recognize the role played by NTFPs in rural livelihoods and the need to balance welfare improvement and sustainable forest management.

Título: Credit card holders, convenience users and resolvers: a tobit model with binary selection and ordinal treatment
Fuente: Journal of Applied Economics. v.14, n.2. Universidad del CEMA
Páginas: pp. 225-255
Año: Nov. 2011
Resumen: This paper studies the characteristics of credit card holders in Malaysia and distinguishes between convenience users and revolvers. A Tobit model with binary selection and ordinal treatment is developed to accommodate the data feature that debts are incurred only among card holders and the endogeneity of card holding in card debt. Results from a stratified sample in Malaysia indicate that age, household size, income, education, loan commitments, and current-account ownership play a role in card holding. Age, loan commitments, previous card holdings, current-account ownership, and bad debt history affect the probability and level of card debt. Multi-card holders are more likely to be credit revolvers than convenience users.

Título: Incorporating zero and missing responses into CVM with open-ended bidding: willingness to pay for blue skies in Beijing
Fuente: Environment and Development Economics. v.15, n.5. Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics; Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Páginas: pp. 535-556
Año: Oct. 2010
Resumen: Based on decision theory, this paper suggests a four-hurdle model to deal with zero and missing responses in the contingent valuation method with open-ended bidding, which is used to analyze the willingness to pay for blue skies in Beijing where air pollution is known to be very serious. The mean and the median of the predicted willingness to pay for blue skies per household are, respectively, 120.15 and 128.60 yuan, less than 0.2 per cent of the per capita annual disposal income in Beijing. This is very low compared to results from studies of other countries. The empirical results also indicate that the four-hurdle model is superior to the Tobit model and raw data estimation.

Título: Pemium sex: factors influencing the negotiated price of unprotected sex by female sex workers in México
Fuente: Journal of Applied Economics. v.13, n.1. Universidad del CEMA
Páginas: pp. 67-90
Año: May 2010
Resumen: This paper examines economic, sociocultural, and behavioral risk factors that influence the compensating price difference (premium paid) between sex with and without a condom for female sex workers (FSWs) in U.S.-Mexico border cities. Field data collected in Ciudad Juarez on the price of sex with and without a condom for the same FSW respondent allowed calculation of the price premium for unprotected sex based on these paired prices, holding unobservable characteristics constant. A Tobit model was used to identify the factors determining the price premium. Key predictors of a larger price premium for sex without a condom included: length of time as a FSW; number of male clients; and participation in HIV education. Key predictors of a decrease in the price premium for unprotected sex included: age; a bad financial situation; frequent alcohol consumption before or during sex; and frequent drug use before or during sex.
